Headaches and Migraines

Headaches and migraines are one of the most common things that people believe are a "normal" part of life - but they are not supposed to be. Over 45 million people in the United States report having headaches each year with nearly 5% of people reporting that they have a headache more days than not. Many people turn to medications that, while they may take the edge off, are only able to lessen the symptoms without correcting the cause.

In many cases, that cause of headaches derives from structural issues. Misalignments anywhere in the body, most frequently found in the neck, create added stress and frequent pains. Whether the headaches are constant or the come-and-go, chiropractic can help! At Phipps-Swenson Chiropractic, we are trained to identify the root origin of your headaches and get you the relief your body needs!

Headaches are able to present with a variety of symptoms that can often vary person-to-person. Some common symptoms of headaches can include:

  • Pain on one or both sides of your head

  • Pain that feels like a tight headband around your head

  • Pain involving the back of the head or neck

  • Throbbing pains

  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating

Understanding the type of headaches that you are experiencing is key to accurately resolving the issue and providing lasting relief. â€‹

Tension Headaches: The most common type of headache, found to affect 3 out of every 4 adults. These are often described as a tight band around the head that feels like it is "squeezing" with symptoms often traveling through tense musculature to the shoulders and upper back. These headaches often have a musculoskeletal origin which makes chiropractic treatment the best option to see lasting relief.

Migraine Headaches: Intense, often one-sided pain that can produce nausea, light and sound sensitivity. Many people with migraines also report experiencing a migraine aura, which may be visual or sensory changes, dizziness, or tingling sensations that occur before or during migraines.

Cluster Headaches: These are severe, piercing headaches that appear around or behind one eye that come in short intervals multiple times per day and can last for weeks to months. These are less common but, due to the severity, are extremely debilitating when experienced.

Headaches can be triggered by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, fatigue, emotional or physical stress, musculoskeletal dysfunction, changes in the brain's blood flow or nerve cell activity, changes in weather, lack of sleep, and consumption of certain foods, drinks, and medications.

If left untreated, the cause for headaches will rarely go away, even if symptoms appear to dissipate for a period of time. At Phipps-Swenson Chiropractic, we believe that no one should ever have to live with the pain. If headaches are impacting your life, we can help!
